Sunday Speaker – Prof. Gary Marchant: Artificial Intelligence – Not “The Terminator”, Not Salvation, But Something Important Nonetheless!

Discover how AI's latest breakthroughs are revolutionizing society and our lives! This talk demystifies AI, exploring its incredible potential and the crucial risks we face.

Description:

Professor Gary Marchant will provide an overview of artificial intelligence (AI) and its benefits and risks. With a minimum of technical jargon, he will describe key recent developments – namely machine learning and generative AI – and explain why these new developments have suddenly propelled AI to the forefront of every industry and corner of society, though AI itself has been around for over 70 years. He will also discuss the frenzied pace and race to develop better AI, both between private companies and between the major global superpowers.

Professor Marchant will provide an overview of the many beneficial applications of AI, focusing on medical applications as a case study and explain how AI is rapidly improving research, diagnosis and treatment, while enhancing health care administration. In contrast, he'll address the existing risks already posed by AI to privacy and autonomy, fairness and employment, in addition to future concerns such as military use of autonomous weapons.

Professor Marchant will close by imagining the potential futures of AI, including the Artificial General Intelligence and the implications for our future well-being and survival.
