Sunday Speaker: Senator Lauren Kuby – An Update on Arizona’s Legislative Session

Sunday Speaker Topic:

Senator Lauren Kuby - An Update on Arizona's Legislative Session

Description:

Talk Summary: The good—88 bad bills vetoed, protecting families and democracy. The bad and ugly—water inaction, stalled heat protections, and shameful delays in disability care funding.

Bio:

Senator Lauren Kuby is a nationally recognized sustainability and democracy advocate with a long track record of public service and community engagement. As the former manager of community outreach at Arizona State University’s Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation, she worked to connect the ASU community, local businesses, nonprofits, and neighborhoods with sustainable solutions. She also led the Stardust Center for Affordable Housing and the Family, helping to address critical housing needs across Arizona. Though now retired from ASU, she remains a Senior Global Futures Scientist and continues to advocate for climate action, worker protections, and social equity.

Kuby served on the Tempe City Council, where she championed policies advancing climate resilience, equal pay, earned sick leave, affordable housing, campaign finance reform, and racial justice. Her leadership on a dark money ballot initiative—passed with over 91% voter support—gained national attention and earned her a feature in the MSNBC docuseries American Swamp. A firm believer in the power of local government, Kuby was profiled in Juan Gonzales’ Reclaiming Gotham as part of a rising movement of progressive city leaders. She’s twice been named a Climate Hero by the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter and has received numerous awards for her service.
