Sunday Speaker – Greg Freeman: Homelessness and Housing Affordability in Phoenix

Sunday Speaker Topic:

Greg Freeman: Homelessness and Housing Affordability in Phoenix

The Greater Phoenix area has seen large increases in homelessness and housing prices in the past few years. This will be a conversation about many of the factors that contributed to the problem and how we can all take action to help.

In the past few years, the Greater Phoenix area has seen huge changes in both its housing market and in rates of homelessness. These problems have become unavoidable in our lives and are applying strain across many sectors of our society. In my talk I will examine several of the root causes of the issues we are currently facing; including homelessness as an issue of morality versus economics, the lingering impacts of the 2008 housing crash, the intersection of zoning and construction, and many other factors. We will then look at the actions available to elected officials, industry professionals and citizens to reverse these trends.

Greg Freeman grew up in Northwest Phoenix and attended Oakwood Elementary and Centennial High School in the Peoria school district. After getting his bachelor’s in Math and Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines he returned to Phoenix and has lived here ever since. Greg has worked in the real estate industry for more than a decade and in that time worked as an escrow officer, notary, residential leasing agent, construction manager and is currently working as a commercial property manager at MPB Realty. Greg serves on the North Mountain and Deer Valley zoning commissions in Phoenix and is on the board of the Bell Road Business Alliance, Black Mountain Community Alliance, and Kidzchiro Foundation. He is also a member of the Bell Road Community Safety Plan and the Phoenix Police Department Business Initiative. Greg is passionate about finding solutions to the current issues of homelessness and housing affordability that impact people across Maricopa County.
