Why are ideologies poisoning public discourse? Why is extremism on the rise? How did we get here, and what can we do about it?
It turns out some influential assumptions are suppressing our culture’s “immune response” to dangerous ideas. These assumptions prevent us from normalizing critical thinking, and leave us vulnerable to epidemics of unreason.
In this talk, philosopher Andy Norman will identify the root cause of mass irrationality, and argue that we can inoculate minds against unhinged thinking.
Andy Norman is an award-winning author and public philosopher. He studies how the mind’s immune system works and helps people develop immunity to bad ideas. He thinks this is the key to growing wiser together.
Andy is currently testing a “mind vaccine”—a way to inoculate minds against viral nonsense.
Andy directs the Humanism Initiative at CMU. He’s done research on the evolutionary origins of human reasoning and the norms that make dialogue fruitful. He’s published in Scientific American, Skeptic, Free Inquiry, and The Humanist. He’s the author of Mental Immunity: Infectious Ideas, Mind-Parasites, and the Search for a Better Way to Think.
