Sunday Speaker: Dr Lisa Woody – Unearned Privilege: How do we define it, and what types of unearned privileged identities exist?

Privilege in our country is often granted according to identities that are entirely out of our control. Specific identities that can result in privilege (or a lack thereof) include Race, Sex, Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, Religion, Socio-economic Status, Nation of Origin/First Language, and Able-Body/Able-Mindedness.

This one-hour presentation on unearned privilege will review eight different types of identities that can lead to people being granted or denied significant privileges.

Unearned privileges are built into the structure of our society, our laws (past and present), and our social norms. Privilege is designed deliberately so that folks who HAVE privilege will be largely unaware of their privilege - particularly if they never spend time with folks who have different identities. While there are many identities we could discuss, we will focus on the eight identities of Race, Sex, Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, Religion, Socio-economic Status, Nation of Origin/First Language, and Able-Body/Able-Mindedness - specifically because these identities are out of the control of the individual. In other words, simply being born into certain non-privileged identities results in a significant loss of privilege, status, and opportunities as citizens, regardless of individual talents, skills, or hard work.

For each of the eight identities, we will briefly touch upon the historical treatment of the identity and specific privileges that folks with each identity may be denied in day-to-day life.

Dr. Lisa Woody is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Health Psychologist who earned her doctorate from UCLA in 2002. She spent five years as a tenure-track faculty member of the Psychology department at the University of Northern Colorado, and she then resigned to Adjunct status due to chronic migraines.

She currently teaches at least one class per semester at UNC, while also operating a business in which she conducts neuropsychological evaluations for clients with a wide variety of medical and psychological disabilities.

Dr. Woody has been married (to another Dr. Woody!) since 2006; they have two sons who are ages 13 and 9. She is an organic gardener, former Master Gardener, and former yoga instructor. Most importantly, Dr. Woody essentially emerged from the womb in 1974 with a distinct interest in social injustice. Her journey towards social justice was shaped early on by having an ardent feminist for a mother, as well as a gay father and stepfather.

Though she has been teaching concretely about privilege for well over a decade, recent events have pushed her to become more involved and to try to be even more of a leader in the field. One direct consequence of her activism is the development of a 3.5 hour lecture on the History of Race in the United States that she has committed to presenting in every single class she teaches.
