Erik Nelson: Fungal Ecology and Mushroom Identification in Arizona Forests
Description:
We'll get a primer on where fungi belong in the tree of life, and the different types of fungi. We'll learn the primary roles that fungi play in ecosystems. Then Erik will discuss mushroom identification, and common mushrooms found in Arizona.
Bio:
Erik Nelson specializes in the fields of mycology and aerobiology, has practiced environmental consulting since 2005, was an environmental microbial analyst for several years, and is one of a few environmental fungal identification experts in the state of Arizona. He has a Masters-level scientific background with foci in mycology, plant pathology, and forest ecology. He presents fungal ecology lectures and guides mushroom collection forays in Northern Arizona. Erik's forest pathology research currently supports important forest health planning models used by the US Forest Service.
Erik has provided professional environmental health and safety consulting, and environmental microbiology analytical services since 2005. He has performed over 1000 environmental quality projects in residential, commercial, medical and industrial properties. He has expertise across environmental issues including, but not limited to: Fungal and other microbial contamination (including Legionella and SARS-COV-2), Water Incursion.
