Sunday Speaker: Noah Schramm: The State of Asylum

Sunday Speaker Topic: The State of Asylum: On the U.S. Southwest Border and in Congress Description: Beginning with a brief overview of U.S. asylum policy including its basic provisions and historical roots, Noah will outline some of the main humanitarian issues arising in border regions and explain how those issues intersect with U.S. policies governing asylum access. Subtopics here will include systems at vs. between ports of entry, the reality of organized crime, the role of non-governmental shelter providers, ICE detention, and access to counsel in immigration courts. Noah will then pivot to a discussion about the changes to asylum law being floated by members of the U.S. Congress, the rationale behind these proposals, their potential impacts, and their moral implications. Finally, Noah will share about the ACLU’s current advocacy around this and other related issue areas. Bio: Noah Schramm is a policy strategist at American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Arizona, where he works exclusively on immigration and border issues at the federal and state levels. Previously, he worked for several years at the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project as a legal assistant and project coordinator, providing direct legal aid to migrants in both detention and shelter settings. Noah studied political economy at the University of Washington and later obtained his master’s in international migration and public policy at the London School of Economics.
