Leaving Religion Discussion Group

Many people today are experiencing either a change in their religious beliefs or have left religion altogether. This often results in a loss of close relationships. Know that you are not alone.

Discovering how to live after leaving religion or changing beliefs is a journey. Even though you may be experiencing more freedom, and you know that it was the right thing for you, it doesn’t mean it has been easy.

This meet-up is designed to provide a welcoming place for each person to share feelings, thoughts and stories for a few minutes, or to simply listen to others.

This is not meant to be a support, counseling or therapy group. We are meeting and talking to others who have gone through similar experiences which can be healing or comforting. You’ll meet former believers who are now atheists, agnostics or not sure what they are.

Based on our discussion during the February 1st meeting, we have decided that for our March 1st meeting, we will discuss our ideas regarding either spirituality or identity. Please come prepared to give a 4 minute description to the group of either

How you would describe your spirituality or means of connection to others now that you have left religion, or

How you would describe your identity now that you are no longer religious. Are you a humanist, atheist, agnostic, non-theist, satanist, or something else, and why?

The event lead will bring notepads for people to write their questions/thoughts down during each person’s sharing time. Then, we will give 2 minutes for follow up questions from the group for each person.

We meet 90 minutes once a month at the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix. Humanism is a secular philosophy that encourages critical thinking and ethics.

Let’s enjoy some great conversation and get to know some awesome people. Join us.
