How are authoritarians able to win over so many white people? And convince them that they’re better off with fewer rights and economic instability? And what will it take to beat them at their own game?
MAGA-style, authoritarian governments are winning elections across the globe with unapologetic racism at the center of their campaigns. And Black people, Muslims, and immigrants are overwhelmingly experiencing the violent attacks of their regimes. In 2020, millions of people from Minneapolis to Milan hit the streets in response to the racist murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and went searching for what it means to be anti-racist. Six years later, in a time of authoritarian consolidation, what does it mean to show up as an anti-racists today?
Join Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi to explore these topics and more in a conversation about his latest book, Chain of Ideas: the Origins of Our Authoritarian Age, a deep-dive on the startling effectiveness of the use of the “Great Replacement Theory” over time and in this moment. In his book, Dr. Kendi charts the steps– what he calls “the chain of ideas” – that authoritarians have built to create the conditions for authoritarianism to thrive.
Together, we’ll talk about how they use the chain of ideas to drive us apart, what it will take to understand ourselves as more deeply connected, and then get into the particular role and responsibility that white Americans have in this work.
