Sunday Speaker Topic:
The SRP Nobody Knows
Description:
Lauren Kuby, a two-term councilmember and former vice mayor of Tempe, as well as a 2022 candidate for the Corporation Commission, is a long-time advocate for consumer, environmental, and worker protections. Lauren is a recognized national champion for climate action and cities as incubators of innovation. Veteran journalist Juan Gonzales featured Lauren in his book, Reclaiming Gotham, citing her as evidence of a growing movement of cities taking progressive action and challenging legislative interference in local democracies.
Lauren has been a leader in Tempe's efforts toward social, economic, climate, and racial justice, including equal pay, earned sick days, climate action plans, affordable housing, animal welfare, urban forestry, transparency, and campaign-finance reform. She spearheaded a dark-money ballot initiative, garnering 91.44% support from Tempe voters. For her efforts exposing the corruptive influence of money in politics, Lauren was featured in the MSNBC docuseries, American Swamp.
As manager of ASU’s Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family, she worked with cities and nonprofits to connect the dots among housing, health, food access and transportation and help craft regional integrated solutions leading to happy, healthy communities. Although retired from ASU, she remains a Senior Global Futures Scientist.
Lauren is now a candidate for the Salt River Project Board in District 5. The Board sets utility rates and renewable energy standards, changes in their polices could lead us to a just transition for Arizona's coal-based economies and indigenous communities as well as a restoration for rooftop solar.
Randy Miller has served on the SRP Board in at-large seat 14 since 2018 and is seeking re-election in 2022 for SRP Division 8. He is a Software Engineer with over 23 years of professional experience and has spent his entire professional career working locally in Arizona. Randy has worked for Intel, Microsoft, GoDaddy, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Trizetto, and Cloudmed.
Randy completed his Master’s of Science in Computer Science from Columbia University in New York, NY and his Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He is an advocate for solar and other forms of renewable energy. He has been driving an electric vehicle since 2012 and had solar panels installed on his home in 2010.
