Sunday Speaker: Jeanne Casteen of Secular AZ – What Now, Arizona?

Jeanne Casteen will discuss the outcome of the Arizona elections, from school board to governor, and what that means for the state of secularism in the Grand Canyon State.

Jeanne Casteen will do a deep dive on the outcomes of the 2022 election in Arizona. Come join the discussion about the results for school boards and overrides, ballot initiatives, legislative races, and more. While the Trumpiest candidates ousted their primary opponents in almost every race, the rejection of Christian nationalist extremism in the general election inspires some hope.

The question now is…what’s next? While the results definitely pushed the needle here in Arizona, the fervent embrace of Christian nationalism is still with us, and we need to stay even more vigilant for the next two years (and beyond).

Ms. Casteen will share a vision for what “the nones” should do next to preserve our democracy and continue to advocate for the Common Good and the separation of church and state. As folks pivot from the midterms to the presidential election in 2024, we will discuss messaging, engagement, and advocacy work in the face of the existential threat of religious extremism.

She will provide information about the great work being done in our state and how atheists, agnostics, humanists, and the rest of the “nones” can be a positive force for change in Arizona.

Jeanne Casteen has a bachelor’s degree in human communication from the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at ASU, a minor in African American History, and a master’s in education, also from ASU. Jeanne has over 14 years of experience teaching in Arizona’s public schools. In 2011, Jeanne completed the Emerge Arizona program and in 2012 became a school board member of the Creighton School District. She served as Board President from 2016 through 2020. In 2020, Ms. Casteen ran for Maricopa County School Superintendent, and came within 12,000 votes of winning. She has been awarded the Arizona School Public Relations Association Award for Excellence in Advocacy and Political Contributions to Education as well as the Arizona School Board Association’s All-Arizona School Board Member Award. Her most recent endeavor was her run for State Senate in Arizona’s Legislative District 2, and she has been the Executive Director for Secular AZ for the last year.
