Voters would not elect the likes of state legislators who believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old if they understood even the most basic science.

Darwin’s theory of evolution has been interpreted incorrectly to support imperialism, colonialism and, more specifically, racism. Beginning in 2016, a number of evidence-based policies implemented by the Obama Administration to mitigate the effects of global warming have been revoked. An alarming anti-science movement seems to be growing in several fields of science. The New York Times recently published a story with the headline: Bipartisan Report Says Trump’s Abuse Has Pushed Federal Science to a ‘Crisis’.

Join us as Kerry Fehr-Snyder, Managing Editor for Science at KJZZ, an NPR member station, discusses the importance of science literacy, especially among the voting public. According to Fehr-Snyder, voters would not elect the likes of state legislators who believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old if they understood even the most basic science. They also would not deny that human activity is accelerating climate change it they stopped to read and listen to scientists.

She will explain how the Arizona Science Desk at KJZZ works to educate listeners and readers about the need for science education. She also will discuss how some reconcile science with religion as is seen with projects such as the Vatican Observatory in Tucson and other projects.
