Theistnormativity: The Normalization of The Belief in God in the United States - Online Only
In the United States there is a tendency to assume people believe in God. This assumption is often tied specifically to Americanism itself. Dr. Kristina M. Lee calls this tendency "theistnormativity." Theistnormativity is engrained in political language through phrases such as "In God We Trust" and "under God." Such language has real implications for how atheists are viewed as U.S. Americans and is deeply tied to Christonormativity and Christian Nationalism. In this presentation, Dr. Lee explains how theistnormativity is ingrained as part of U.S. culture, the impact theistnormativity has on atheists, the relationship between theistnormativity and Christian Nationalism, and what atheists can do to challenge it.
Kristina M. Lee is an Assistant Professor in Communication Studies at University of South Dakota. She specializes in religious and political rhetoric with a particular interest in the marginalization of atheists, Christian nationalism, and interfaith dialogue. She also serves on the board of the Secular Student Alliance.
