Today, we are in the midst of an energy revolution more profound than any we have experienced since the invention of electricity. Paul Hirt explains the characteristics, causes, and likely consequences of this exciting energy transition that is sweeping the world.

Every so often innovative technologies disrupt and transform entire industries, stimulating profound changes in business and daily life. Think: computers and mobile smart phones. Today, we are in the midst of an energy revolution more profound than any we have experienced since the invention of electricity. The old reliable fossil fuel based electric system is being fundamentally transformed by rapidly falling costs for solar panels, wind turbines, and high-efficiency batteries. The electric car revolution is accelerating this trend. Paul Hirt explains the characteristics, causes, and likely consequences of this exciting energy transition that is sweeping the world.

Paul Hirt is a historian and Senior Sustainability Scholar at ASU specializing in environmental history and sustainability studies. He has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles and books on energy history, water, and natural resources conservation. His current scholarly activities focus on the transition to renewable energy in the US and sustainable water management in the desert Southwest. Paul was elected to the board of directors of Salt River Project in 2016 on a pro-solar platform and is working to make SRP a clean energy leader.
