Are we genetically wired for morality? If so, how could this have happened in our evolutionary past? Morality defined as those prosocial qualities of normal human behavior which are heritable and which are enhanced and directed through the experiences of normal human development and social interaction.
Are we genetically wired for morality? If so, how could this have happened in our evolutionary past? Morality defined as those prosocial qualities of normal human behavior which are heritable and which are enhanced and directed through the experiences of normal human development and social interaction. Notice the word prosocial. We are so very intensely social we need to be able to get along with each other and cooperation is very important. Heritable: Although there are many layers between genes and behavior, the universality of moral behavior in humans points to these prosocial behaviors as having a heritable component in the genes themselves.

Diann Smith proceeds by presenting examples of hardwired morality to show that we are indeed born with morality from our genes up. She then identifies and describes those selective pressures which created this hardwired morality.

Diann has been a member of HSGP for about 28 years. She has a great interest in science and particularly in nature and the wild world. She is a third generation native Arizonan. This presentation will be the culmination of a year of research into the subject. Diann has a BS in Psychology, minoring in Sociology from the University of Arizona, an Associates Degree in Radiologic Technology from Pima Community College, and Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Zoology, specializing in Behavioral Ecology from Arizona State University.
